04-24-2017 GAME THREAD: Back On the Road Again in Milwaukee

by Mary 24. April 2017 16:59

Here's hoping Amir Garrett continues his sterling starts tonight against the slugging Brewers.  We can hope Eric Thames is entering a cold spell and doesn't go on another HR spree this week.

Billy ball from the first pitch tonight. A single, stolen base, obstruction call and he's on third

Man, terrible AB's by Peraza and Duvall with BH at third, less than 2 outs--terrible.

So much for shutting down Thames

Garrett missing his magic tonight in the first.

I've got dinner guests showing up within the hour, so I'd better get back to fixing food.  Hope things turn around for the Reds

Nearly every Scott Schebler at bat makes me want to see Jesse Winker in right field. The Reds need high OBP guys not another Jay Bruce.

Big hit by the rookie.

Hopefully, Garrett's first inning was just a  blimp on the radar?

Mary

Nope--Eric Thames repeats in the second what he did in the first

A out walk, then a hanging 0-2 slider, and the same guy hits it out again.

6-1 Brewers.

Should have said a 2 out walk with 2 outs.

Well, we are back in it. Once again, hope Garrett can find what has been his normal self this inning, give us a couple solid innings?

Garza at 80 pitches through three innings. Need to make this bull pen work tonight. Going to play them next two games.

Yep, good point.

GeneWV
GeneWV

That 3 run shot after the 2 out error by the Brewers had to help Schebler's head a little, after a HR yesterday, and a RBI single--or, at least, one would hope so?

GeneWV
GeneWV
4/24/2017 9:07:04 PM #

But, the bad vibes continue for Garrett tonight.

Price trying to save his pen as well, as Garrett goes back out there for another one.

GeneWV
GeneWV

Still only one TD less the extra point down.

Youngster looked sharp in his debut.

GeneWV
GeneWV

Suarez has killed the ball twice--0-2.

That touchdown lead looks a little more secure with Garza gone--but iot is the pen, and they still got 4 more to negotiate.

Hernandez is considered a possible closer. Throws real hard and got a decent breaking ball.

GeneWV
GeneWV
4/24/2017 10:10:01 PM #

Yep, you can be a 2 pitch bullpen guy if you can throw hard, and with command.

Looked good tonight for sure.

I heard Price say what impressed them down on the farm was that he could throw hard, and strikes.

Dawginnaples
Dawginnaples
4/24/2017 10:31:05 PM #

Not even through eight innings and the Brewers have already thrown over 180 pitches. 90 plus from the bull pen. That's good work there.

Reds loose 11 - 7. They did have 9 hits drew 6 walks and 2 reach on errors. They also were able to make the Brewers pen throw 99 pitches. That may serve them well tomorrow and Wednesday. Rookie Davis back Wednesday and Mesoraco on Friday.

Another day, another game and opportunity for Eric Thames to continue his bombardment of the Reds.  Seven HRs in 5 games is unreal.

For our Reds we may have to come up with a new stat--runners that walk with 2 outs and score. Unreal how many times that seems to have happened this year.

Probably niot nearly as often as it seems to me, but.....

Dawg, Mary,

Seems like both of you are going the other team's announcers tonight.

Not a bad way to go, especially if Thom is calling the game several nights in a row.

Tonight I am doing the Red's broadcast, however.

Mary

Remember the days a few years back when the internet and sports talk radio wanted to release Cozart cause "he can't hit"?  His second hit of the game raises his season's average above .400 again

GeneWV
GeneWV
4/25/2017 8:55:40 PM #

Yep, I remember all the get rid of him talk very well. I always liked him, even when he was mostly all glove, no hit, because at that time he was incredible in the field before the injuries came. Now, he is just real good in the field, and a great hitter.

As Dawg says, he is also humble--a quality I love.

Man, 6 runners left on in last three innings.

Brewers taking advantage of walking their pitcher with 2 outs to load the bases for Villar to knock in 2 more--as we have often said, "walks kill"

Duvall with a fine catch on Thames sinking line drive to finally end it at 4-0 Brewers after 4

GeneWV
GeneWV
4/25/2017 9:07:19 PM #

Another 2 out rally, once again mostly facing the bottom of the lineup--and a 2 out walk to a very weak hitting pitcher--by our most veteran guy. Geez.

Very little going right for our Reds recently.

GeneWV
GeneWV
4/25/2017 9:36:58 PM #

Of course; Thames with his 8th HR in April off the Reds.  Can you say Mr Stephenson has been ineffective tonight?

Dawginnaples
Dawginnaples
4/25/2017 9:51:42 PM #

Schebler is just killing this team. Winker doing all he can do in AAA to get a shot and he's being held back by a guy who is sub standard on defense and has an OBP somewhere near the interstate. Peraza not doing much either. Wouldn't mind seeing Dillon Herrera if he is healthy. And maybe it's time the Reds stop drafting pitching and just fill up AA and AAA with retreads. Those types are outperforming our high prospects by a mile.

Mary

Big Time Ugly tonight--all around, except for Cozart, Peraza, and Suarez.

Wonder how tough the transition is from lifetime starter to reliever? Stephenson just looked lost out there.

GeneWV
GeneWV
4/25/2017 10:04:29 PM #

I actually think it's too early to give up on Peraza. He had a great second half last year, which outweighs a rough 2o+ games so far this year, IMO,  and tonight he took more pitches, as if he had been encouraged to so, got two hits first couple times up.

On Schebler, you certainly have a case to make. I was in favor of giving him some more time, but it would be hard to argue he has struggled big-time so far, maybe indicating his slow start last year was more his norm than his good last couple months?

Stevenson has just never proved he can pitch up here, and so far, neither has Reed, who I thought the first couple times I seen him last year might be the real deal--but has generally fizzled except for a couple of relief appearances. Probably too early to just cast him off, but he definitely needs to do some work back on the farm I think.

We shall see I guess?

I checked on Herrera. He has been playing in the 'ville but only has a .250 OBP. while living on the BA interstate. Probably still getting in the groove while battling back from the shoulder thing. I wouldn't give up on any of these guys just yet but think several of them could benefit from a trip down I-71. The team has plenty of guys to evaluate and this season seems to be the time to do it. Maybe shuffling the chairs on the deck of a sinking ship is not prudent for most situations but I think it would be ideal for this team at this time. Of course, that's why my office is in the back room of a modest home and not part of a huge stadium complex. 😜

I just looked in to see what is going on in the game--the Reds have 4 solo HRs and nothing else in the way of offense and some pretty lousy pitching, starting with Rookie Davis
