04-13-2017 GAME THREAD: Brew Crew Invades GABP For Four Games

by Mary 13. April 2017 10:29

Coming off an unbelievable 5-1 road trip to St. Louis and Pittsburgh, the Reds look to maintain the special feeling to the start of the season by winning their 4th straight series.  The old guys are starting the first two games (Arroyo on Thursday and Feldman on Friday) and I hope Bronson turns it around and Feldman keeps it where he was his second start.  Who will pitch in Rookie Davis's slot on Sunday is still TBD.  My personal bet is that it will be Sal Romano from L'Ville, as it slots into his day to pitch and his last outing was commanding for the Bats.

Dawg, the link you posted shows that the Reds have some real  strengths in the pipeline.  Your buddy, along with Hamilton and Peraza (assuming they can all get on base) could make stolen bases in record numbers if they played together.

He looked kind of similar to the old BHam with an 0 for 4 and 3 stolen bases in one game. In another, though, he was 4/4 with a walk.
His mom is a local news anchor, I think it was in Mississippi. Dad was in construction, I think. Really good folks. The kind you wanna pull for.

Mary
Mary
4/14/2017 9:37:36 AM #

Interesting.  I'm glad Bryan Price is allowed more freedom to do what he said last year that he wanted to start doing. Of course, the first half of last year it would have made no difference as there was not such thing as "best" relief pitcher.  They were pretty uniformly going to get pounded from the first batter on.

Mary
Mary
4/14/2017 1:16:24 PM #

Barrett Astin optioned to L'Ville, Jesse Winker recalled.  Astin will have to learn all the shortcuts from L'Ville to Cincinnati this season, as this is unlikely to be his last (or second to last) call up. Only counts as one option, and he performed relatively well while with the Reds.  Winker makes the bench a bit more realistic.  What I am still wondering about is what is done with the third catcher when Snacks is ready to return.  Rule 5 means he can be sent out with out offering him back.

Dawginnaples
Dawginnaples
4/14/2017 2:14:10 PM #

I would like to see Winker and his obscenely high OBP in the starting lineup. Schebler is having a bit of trouble at the plate lately.

Dawginnaples

And Alcantara doesn't seem to be adjusting to limited playing time.

Mary
Mary
4/14/2017 2:59:01 PM #

Agree--just meant Winker makes the position player/pitcher ratio match a better bench, not that he should necessarily be on that bench

Dawginnaples
Dawginnaples
4/14/2017 3:16:13 PM #

Oh, I didn't mean to imply that either. Just expressing a preference. He could be really good for the bench depth as well. Maybe less pitchers pinch hitting or running the bases where they might sustain an injury. Dude has a .399 career OBP. That's up there near Joey Votto territory. He has been rated a strong defensive player as well. I think it was Doc Procter that was a strong advocate for him last year, citing both those reasons.

GeneWV
GeneWV
4/14/2017 3:18:05 PM #

I agree with all of what you guys are saying, pointing out, except I would not be too quick to come to a decision on Schebler. He did this last year early on, then had a really good, pretty well sustained  second half. He just may be a slow starter?

That said, I understand wanting to see Winker get some playing time, I want that as well--just not ready to see him just replace Schebler. With Hamilton being as frail as he has shown to be, he needs a little more days off than most regular players, and it certainly would not hurt for Schebler and Duvall to take a day or so off per week--after all, we can't forget Duvall has some serious issues with diabetes, so pushing him too much, everyday, might be too much as well, wear him down long term, both for the season, and for his career.? On this team, I think there is plenty of playing time  for 4 OF's. JMO.

By the way, Alcantrera has looked just awful at the plate--he does not look like, early on as it may be, a guy that adjust to playing the bench? Time will tell, of course.

Anyway, love the stuff on the pen.

Dawg, Mr. Denton still doing well?

Feldman repays Price's confidence in him as he gets a GBDP after the mound visit after walking the bases loaded.  Still 3-2 Reds mid 5.  This has to be it for Feldman though, as he has over 100 pitches.

GeneWV
GeneWV
4/14/2017 8:50:26 PM #

I must admit, I would not have left Feldon in there after the third walk of the inning, and almost a 100 pitches.

Turns out, he did leave him in, and Feldon "veterans" himself through it. Good for Price, good for Feldon, good for the team. Also, Gene was more than glad to be wrong.

Well, that is 2 straight times Wood has been less than stellar. A balk to move the runners up to second and third,, and a 0-2 pitch for the go ahead RBI is just not good. I guess the entire pen cannot be good all the time.

You could have gone all week and not said that--because it is true.

Hopefully, it was a 1 inning end of the nightmare that is lack of command for our entire pitching staff?

We shall see which it was?

A GREAT 11 pitch AB by Schebler before his full count HR, followed by what is becoming a typical good AB by Suarez for a double.

Cozart has just been phenomenal so far--and was again today with his triple.

Cozart broke on contact the other day, cost us a run, today gained us one--the go ahead on a grounder by Tucker--who made sure he did not K with a runner at third and less than 2 out.

Just a solid offensive inning all around after about 8 in a row of futility. More than gratifying to see.

As long as Bob Steve is willing to challenge hitters, not get too picky, try to nibble them to dearth, and is willing to throw his off speed stuff in tough situations, he has a chance to be successful up here. Despite the HR that inning, he was not bad at all.

I got to see a lot of the game but was not able to comment as I was keeping a very close eye on my father. We had all five of my grandkids at my daughters house in Cincy and Pops felt good enough to hang around for the whole game. Had to help him up and back down the steps but he ate and everything.
Terrible about Finnegan. Was hoping it was a teaching moment and not an injury. Cozie is on fire. Suarez pretty hot as well. Defense showing signs of beginning to gel. Votto having better at bats. Schebler not hot but still taking advantage of mistakes. Still very entertaining baseball with a very sunny horizon.
Feeling blessed on many levels today.

Great hearing that your father got to enjoy extended family after the health scare earlier this week.

Price seems to know when to let pitchers hit for themselves (or others)--although I believe part of that success is that there are some very athletic guys on the pitching staff (Lorenzen, Iglesias come to mind immediately)

He really deserves a lot of credit for being brave enough to manage outside the box. Especially when you consider he may not be on the firmest of foundations with only a one year contract and lots of detractors. He's throwing some of the rules right out the window. Fun to see!

Dawg,

Let me throw my two cents in concerning your Dad. GREAT news to all of us.

Hopefully, Finnegan will be fine after some rest, and all this will work out fine?

I have always liked Price, as you guys know. Hopefully, he continues to have success doing what he is doing, and gets a extension later this year? Learning on the go has it's advantages and disadvantages, but more than anything, IMO, he has just had teams with major holes in the 25 man roster, or has been besieged with injuries way beyond he norm since he has been there--often to relatively young players--especially pitchers.

Anyway, more than glad to get that win today.

Bullpen reinforced with Tim Adleman recalled along with Sal Romano to start today. Jesse Winker optioned back to the Bats and Brandon Finnegan to the 10 day DL.  After all the innings the bullpen has put in, more pitchers probably make more sense than an extra Bat.

Not a good weekend of baseball after  great start in the first three series.

This stuff happens in baseball, of course. However, this series was a little unsettling because of our pitchers getting hit pretty hard, the pen not being as dependable, and the offense falling off a little as well, and most disturbingly, a few mental mistakes.

If we come back and play some good baseball in the next few days, win or lose, I will be OK.  I just don't want to start playing bad baseball--win or lose. Good pitching can shut you down offensively, but the pitchers we faced were not all that intimidating as a group, so we should pick back up offensively I think?  Pitching, we shall see?

GeneWV
GeneWV
4/16/2017 8:13:29 PM #

I should point out, there were still some bright spots--Suarez continues to shine on both sides of the ball, BH made a couple of great catches this series, Adleman, who I have liked from the beginning of last year, had a solid day on the mound, Cozart stayed hot except for today, etc. Joey heating up quicker rather than later would be a boost in the arm as well.
