Anyone else think Arroyo will be quite the contrast to the pitching the Redbirds have seen so far in this series?  Latos and Bailey in the mid to upper 90's, Chapman 100+ can hopefully prove to be a good setup to someone whose fastballs are slower than those others' offspeed pitches.

Last night was really, really fun.

Also, I'm freakin' sick of St. Louis writers making denigrating remarks about GABP attendance on Twitter. I swear, Derrick Goold does it at least once a season, and I'm guessing that if we looked back, it would be after a St. Louis loss every time. Deflection. Jerk. Homer.

(I think I'm done. I might not be. We'll see.)

I'd suggest that the best approach is simply not to care what St. Louis writers say about our team, or attendance, or the city.  This is even more true while the Reds are whipping on the STL team.

I know this, I really do. I don't follow any of them on Twitter or read their columns in the paper. But it shows up nonetheless, because others retweet it into my path. I'm just venting. Smile

good summary of who can be on post season rosters; I see that a lot of those tweeting feel that BHam cannot be on the roster (DougDirt, Joel Luckhaupt among them) and that Champ felt there were ways to manipulate the roster if his presence was wanted

Mary
Mary
9/4/2013 12:47:56 PM #

here's a key paragraph:
Here’s the rub: A player cannot join a postseason roster until he joins the 40-man roster. That means a team would have to open up a 40-man spot for the speedy young shortstop. So moves like that are rare. If you’re not on a team’s 40-man roster on Aug. 31, you probably will not show up in October.

But the Reds DID open a roster spot for BHam after the end of August, so he is an exception that proves the rule.

When Bronson was somewhat ineffective in Denver, the humidity was reported at around %50. The humidity for tonight's titanic struggle is forecast to be around %56. Bronson may need to rely more on location and speed variation to get outs.

Dawginnaples
Dawginnaples
9/4/2013 1:23:37 PM #

...and of course, the humidity may be higher along the river than it is on the plateau where the airport is loacted. Also, humidity is only part of the air density picture. Playing at less than 1000 ft altitude is much different than playing at over 5000 ft.

Mary
Mary
9/4/2013 1:24:45 PM #

I'm not sure it was the humidity as much as the difference in altitude.  There is quite a bit lower density a mile up than there is at GABP level of around 700 ft. Just looked up in a table and see at the same temperature and same humidity, there would be a 15-20% lower density in Denver than Cincinnati.

Just bouncing around the net a bit and saw this about one of the pitchers that will be on the mound at GABP this weekend, Zack Greinke:

Greinke also went 1-for-2 at the plate and is hitting .347/.429/.388 on the season, but the main topic of conversation after the game was his steal of second base, and specifically his headfirst slide. Though Mattingly said he wasn't worried.

and that was his second steal of the season!

Mary
Mary
9/4/2013 2:03:45 PM #

Greinke was asked if the steal was called, by either Mattingly or third base coach Tim Wallach.

"They didn't call that, but they didn't say not to go," Greinke said.

Thanks for the starter, Mary, and the science lesson.  So, a 90 degree, 90% humidity day in Denver feels cooler than here because the air isn't as dense.  Interesting.

The only density measurement that matters is the density between Arroyo's ears.  Maybe his hair.  We'll see.  Smile

A name just popped in my head-I don't do this often.  Does anyone remember Jon Nunnally?  I have no idea why his name just appeared in the extreme denseness of my gray matter.

To bring a conversation over from the past thread.  Btalbert asked if we sweep the WLB's do we root for them against the Pirates next series.

I have to say I root for the Pirates to win two of three but basically don't allow myself to be disappointed by any outcome.  Now if if were the last week of the season I might look at it differently but with 6 still remaining against the Pirates I say bury the Cards and I give us a shot against the Pirates.

One comment about the air density thing, and I have no science to back this up or anything, but when I was in Sedona 2 summers ago it was 95 out, and it was monsoon season so the humidity was probably in the 40-50% range so it wasn't too bad, BUT because of being further south, and the 4000 foot plus Elevation, the sun just kicked our asses during the day time.  We had to have bottles of water with us everywhere we went during the day time.  At night of course it would get darn right cool out into the low 60's it felt great.

That doesn't have anything to do with baseball, but I don't neccessarily think it felt cooler because the sun was so much more intense.

I love Hanigan in the lineup.  I just feel like a healthy Hanigan is such an upgrade over Mes.  Since Hanigan has come back from the injury he has got on base 18 of his 40 plate appearances.  I think that comes up to about a 411 OBP.  I also just think he's so much better with the pitching staff and on defense in general.

Mes' BA right now is 34 points higher than Hanigan's and his OBP for the year is 25 points lower.  Mes has a -0.1 WAR in 89 games and Hanigan has a +0.1 WAR in 59 games.  That's nothing to get too wound up about but considering he was hurt the whole time he played before this last stretch, not bad.  Also tells how good he is on D, to be a 212 hitter and still have a positive WAR.

Mez got hot there for a short stretch and helped the struggling offense, right now he's not hitting the ball as well and so I'll gladly go with a healthy Hanigan. I am grateful that Mez was able to get a bit hot during that stretch so Hanigan could take the time necessary to get healthy.  I think we often forget how much the offense has missed a typical Hanigan year when we discuss the absence of Ludwick for most of the season.  We've basically missed Ludwick and Hanigan most of the year and it's hurt.

If I recall correctly, we batted Nunnally lead off a fair amount.  I think his claim to fame (on those horrible teams) was he was very good at bunting.  He often bunted leadoff and got on a fair amount of the time.  I might be confusing him with someone else--but I think that was him.

Redfaced, that's what I was telling people a few weeks back.  On FB so many were saying neither Hanigan or Ludwick would make a difference.  Ludwick had a fluke year last year, Mes was hitting well and coming into his own.  I told them they were nuts.  Hanigan has a lifetime OBP of 365.  Even with is 212 average for the year his OBP is 324.  Ludwicks lifetime OBP is 334 even with those horrible years in San Diego.  I said basically all those 2 guys had to be, was who they've been their whole careers and this team would be much better.

It does amaze me, how much people just talk and don't look at the numbers or they only talk about BA or RBIs.  Ludwick was better than all 3 guys who filled in for him combined.  Mes did a great job in Hanigan's absence, but Hanigan is an upgrade in both facets of the game.

Perhaps my favorite, though, is the idea the Reds haven't missed Cueto because Cingrani has done so well.  I've even heard the same fools say the Reds should trade Cueto now for a bat.  I just don't get it!

BTA,

Not to argue, but I'm not sure the Reds have missed Cueto. Cingrani's numbers are off the charts awesome - the league hits him about as well as they've hit Kershaw, and his top four or five in the league striking guys out. Sure, he's not real efficient, but look:

Reds record in Tony Cingrani starts, 2013: 10-6
Reds record in Johnny Cueto starts, 2012: 22-11

So Cueto's better... Except you have to factor in the game Cingrani got hurt in. Healthy Cingrani had the team at a 10-5 record, or, almost the identical winning percentage as Cueto last year.

All in all, the Reds haven't missed Cueto, I don't think. At all. That doesn't mean you trade either one of them; it just means you're happy you had Cingrani to cover for Cueto.

DocProc

I'm not saying Cingrani hasn't been great, but I just think anytime you lose one of the best pitchers in the National League, you miss the guy.  I totally get what you are saying though.  It's a good problem to have knowing if one of your pitchers goes down you have another guy to fill in that won't hurt your rotation any.

Champ Summers

If Cueto is healthy then maybe Cingrani fills in for Marshall or whoever else was broken down in the pen.

We've discussed the domino effect here plenty of times. Sure, Cingrani stepped up big but he doesn't go deep into games and he taxes the pen. If Cueto was healthy the pen isn't used as much and guys like O or Simon might have not been needed as much.

Glad Cingrani was here but not having Cueto has had its effect on the staff.

Dawginnaples
Dawginnaples
9/4/2013 7:04:03 PM #

Exactly. The other effect we should be grateful for is the MLB experience Cingrani has gotten. If we loose Bronson or trade Homer, Tony is much more ready to jump right into the rotation WITH Cueto, next year.

Really, guys were saying BH would not be eligible for the play offs? It's unlikely but if the right guy is DL'd any Red who is on the 40 and was in the Reds org by 8/31 is available. You can't just add him, he needs to replace an injured player not on the 60... I think.

Too me, Votto hs never been Votto all year--at the plate, or, in the field. Early on I thought his knee might still be giving him trouble ( still may be? ),but as the season as progressed, he has just not been superman anymore--which eh always was. .genewv
.genewv
9/5/2013 8:05:18 AM #

I watched for 15, could not take it anymore after the Heisey bunt attempt with 2 out. I have to assume Heisey did it on his own, lost track of outs, something of that nature. Whomever was responsible, and I assume it was Heisey, it was beyond silly. I cannot imagine that play being called from the bench.

Anyway, extremely disgusting after 2 big wins, and BA pitching so well. We just did not play very well at the beginning, as in the first inning with huge chances to score, and early on with 2 mental errors, one on a throw from Choo letting the runner on first advance to second and then score on the Votto error, instead of still being on first, the other on BA not hustling down to first assuming he was going to be out on the sac bunt, creating 2 outs with runners on 2nd and third instead of bases loaded with 1 out. That is a 2 run swing, one they got they should not, one we lost we should have got, which would have made everything else that happened a non happening--and we would have been in bed early. Then there was the attempted Heisey bunt with 2 outs, couple of weird moves late in the lineup, hitting, etc.,--Lord.

Physical errors happen, mental errors cannot happen in games like these. They will get you beat almost every time.

I'm glad I left when I did.  That was NOT the present I ordered.

Going tonight with my son.  Plan to eat lots of 1-dollar hot dogs and watch zombies play baseball.

Heisey may have been just trying to draw the 3rd baseman in a little on a pitch he knew was out of the zone. With 2 outs, Choo needs to be closer to the bag until and if the ball is contacted by the bat.
Dusty hitting Paul (who was ice cold) for Hanigan (who's getting on base at a real nice pace lately) was a mistake.Particularly against a guy throwing 99.A bigger mistake was Soto for Miller. Isn't Mes a better option there in every possible scenario? Particularly if he's going in to catch the next inning? And if he's injured or something, then why not Ludwick?
It is beginning to look like handing Dusty an expanded roster just further confuses his mind. Either that or we're back to "all my guys are going to play". Neither is an accceptable position in an extra inning game in a penant race against one of 2 teams ahead of you.
The larger issue, in my mind, is how can you have an expanded roster and not have an viable option to get Votto a day off down the stretch? He is either completely gassed or totally confused right now. Either way, he needs some time off. The only reasonable option is a guy with 12MLB ABs? Are you kidding me Walt? Soto and nobody is what you are good with? I'm appalled!

Totally agree with everything here.  I just get so sick of  watching the mental errors due to lack of focus.  I get that Votto is struggling, but there aren't many plays in big time sports I've seen worse than that error he made throwing the ball over Arroyo's head that allowed the run to score.

I'm with you on the bench.  I am still wondering why both Izturis and Hannahan are still on this team - one of them is enough.  The Reds 3B is a gold glove candidate.  Sure he was unproven defensively at the beginning of the season, but there is zero need for a backup 3B that can't hit right now.

After reading in the Buntapalooza artical that BP's bunt was ordered from the bench, I'm even more flustered with Dusty. At home, in extras, you have to manage like you have 3 outs to get it done. Like the artical says, you are statistically more likely to score with no outs and a runner on first than with 1 out and a runner on second. Why give away that out? Why give away that out with your best RBI guy at the plate? Why give away that out with your best RBI guy at the plate who has already homered and doubled  in the game?...against a lefty.... with 2 LH hitters coming up behind you who are 0 for the game?  I wonder what LaGenius would have done?  No I don't!

It seemed like an odd comment but at one time I was for adding Mike Hessman to the 40 despite his being a journeyman. Yes he is 33ish and a career minor league guy but he also hits the ball a mile and has a ton of minor league HR's. He plays first and has to be able to offer a more professional AB than Soto or the other young guys.

He is the pop you need from the right side off the bench in september. OK so who do you drop from the 40? Shit, there's 5 guys other teams won't claim and could be added back once the season is over.

I'm just some baseball salesman watching from Florida but it seems they could use a guy like this plus he can spell Votto.
