08-06-15 GAME THREAD: MORE ODDS AND ENDS FROM THE REDS LUNCHEON

by DocProc 6. August 2015 11:19
--Walt said that of the young pitchers acquired at the trade deadline, Lamb is the most likely to be called up first. --Jon Moscot said that in his first AB in the bigs, he fouled off a pitch and his uncle in the stands caught it. --Pena was hilarious and told several fun stories. One was that he hit two homers on the day his daughter was born but hasn't hit once since. His wife (who calls him "Pena" in his stories) suggested perhaps they need to have another kid to get another homer. --DeJesus plays winter ball in his native Puerto Rico every year. He seems like a very nice guy--and genuinely grateful to be in the majors after a long minor league career. After the luncheon, my wife and I took a tour of the ballpark. I've posted a couple of photos of us in the dugout. Oh, and here are today's lineups. Raining right now--hope it gets played:

08-05-15 GAME THREAD: DOCPROC AT THE REDS LUNCHEON

by DocProc 5. August 2015 16:16
Had a great time today at the Season-Ticket Holders Luncheon at GABP. Photos below are with Brayan Pena (Mary's buddy), Ivan DeJesus Jr. (Sweet Baby), and Jon Moscot (and Mrs. Doc--yes, I'm out of my league). I told DeJesus that we call him Sweet Baby on our blog and he roared with laughter and said he loved it. During the Q and A session I asked Walt if Billy might stop switch-hitting next year. He said he talked with Billy about it a couple of weeks ago and they both agreed to keep him batting from both sides of the plate. (Billy was supposed to be at the luncheon, btw--he had a family matter to attend to. Pena filled in for him and was hilarious.) Lots more to show and tell but I'll stop for now. Oh, and here are the lineups for tonight--I'm going to the game with SonOfDoc:

08-02-2015 GAME THREAD: Another Reds' Rookie Makes HIs First Start

by Mary 2. August 2015 10:22
Can Keyvius Sampson pitch well enough to ensure that this start is not simple a spot start?  Heaven only knows that the Reds need someone to fill the shoes of their departed top of the rotation.  Not that I expect any of the rookies to do that as well as Cueto and Leake did, but the remainder of the season is a great opportunity to show what may be the future Reds' pitching staff.

This time tomorrow we will be only a few minutes from the end of the non-waiver trade period.  Will the roster for the second game versus the Pirates be substantially different from the one for tonight's game? While we are dying of curiosity, those affected directly are probably near the limit of their patience.

Will Joey continue on his unsustainable offensive explosion tonight?  That is something to watch for IMO.

with this lineup for game one.  Big question is how many of these players will still be Reds at this time next week.

I'll let Mark Sheldon supply our starter this evening (http://marksheldon.mlblogs.com/2015/07/21/walks-piling-up-other-notes/): /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-priority:99; mso-style-qformat:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:11.0pt; font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif"; mso-ascii-font-family:Calibri; mso-ascii-theme-font:minor-latin; mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-theme-font:minor-fareast; mso-hansi-font-family:Calibri; mso-hansi-theme-font:minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-theme-font:minor-bidi;} The Reds' pitching staff entered Tuesday leading the Majors in walks with 310. (They were fifth last season). The staff allowed six walks in Monday's win and issued 10 walks on Sunday vs. Cleveland. (Cueto had six). Michael Lorezen lasted only five innings with 106 pitches on Monday in part because of walks. He walked pitcher Clayton Richard with two outs in the second inning. That cost him an additional 15 pitches to get out of the inning. Manager Bryan Price discussed how it's been an issue that's being addressed, especially in side bullpen sessions. But the team also has several rookies, especially in the rotation. “We’re getting a lot of guys that are coming to the big leagues and trying to establish themselves as credible Major League pitchers, Price said on Tuesday. "This is not the same team that we broke camp with that a lot more experienced guys with a lot more years of Major League service time. "One thing so far this season has proven is you have to be able to command the strike zone in order to be successful at this level. What we’re finding are the guys that can and the guys that can’t or won’t. We’ll have to make the necessary adjustments. The one thing that I think is extremely important is that if we’re going to have more success, it’s going to start with the pitching." *Price gave Skip Schumaker a start in left field Tuesday and shifted Marlon Byrd to center field. Price said Byrd was excited for his second start there this season after he did it June 27. “He’s up to the task," Price said. There was nothing wrong with center fielders Billy Hamilton or Jason Bourgeois. “Skip has had one start this month. I want him in the game," Price said. "I have the double header tomorrow. Everybody will start one of those two games. I just like the flow of the offense and wanted to make sure I got Skip I got a start. I’m sure he’ll start another game tomorrow so he’ll be able to put some back-to-back starts together and more than a pinch-hit at-bat. He’s been getting about a pinch-hit at-bat a game this month but he hasn’t been getting the starts. I have to find a way to get him in there and feeling comfortable at the plate.”

Maybe we hear something about trades, maybe we don't, but sooner or later we must, right?  Just don't let there be any rain delays, as this series is already making one prior rainout up as a day night double header on Wednesday
