07/16/2016 GAME THREAD: The Second Half Continues

by Mary 16. July 2016 11:06
Here's hoping that the second half brings hope for the following years.  It was fun watching Disco and Iglesias pitch last night and have the feeling that those two were not going to disappoint. Cingrani had his all too frequent bout of the nibbles and allowed four baserunners in his 2/3 of an inning.  I would say his time as a closer with the Reds is coming to a close :-)

07-09-2016 GAME THREAD: The All Star Game Approaches

I think this means that the trade rumors will take over all the baseball talk in Cincinnati.  We need to enjoy watching Jay Bruce and possibly Zach Cozart while we can.

07/02/2016 GAME THREAD: Will a New Thread End the Losing Streak?

I surely hope so.  Any streak with a 14 inning and a 15 inning loss in it is WAAAAY too long.

06-26-2016 GAME THREAD: Last Chance to Get a Win during a Celebration of Winning

by Dawginnaples 26. June 2016 11:29
Today’s matchup features Anthony DeSclafani, previously scheduled to be the Reds’ opening day starter, against Luis Perdomo who has bounced back and forth between the rotation and the pen. He brings an ERA of 9.00 and a WHIP of 2.12. In other words, this might be a chance for the Reds to get their offensively offensive offense back on track. He’s a righty with a total of five major league starts which means the home team will enjoy a rare edge in starting pitching experience. It might be nice to get a win during the Rose retirement weekend which also celebrates the 40th anniversary of the 1976 World Championship. If Disco can avoid any confrontation with the umpires which might cost him key pitch calls in key situations, he will likely have the edge over Perdomo who is struggling just to remain in his team’s rotation. Maybe Price will resist his normal tendency to rest key players on Sundays due to the expected big crowd and potential media coverage. I think he should let the “A” team have their shot under the lime lights.     And I’d like to end my first attempt at a thread starter with a challenge to the umpiring crew. I realize perfection is something us mere mortals can only strive for but; do you think it would be possible to keep the missed strike zone calls (per Pitch FX or Fox’s K zone, you pick) nearly the same for each team. Is something like a +5 or less in favor of the visiting team attainable?

06-18-2016 GAME THREAD: Reds Welcome Another Lefty to the National League

by Mary 18. June 2016 12:25
Yes, it is Cody Reed making his MLB debut today.  I hope he continues the encouraging performances of his fellow Johnny Cueto trade parts, Brandon Finnegan and John Lamb.  Three actual lefty prospects in the Reds system is a real novelty. Heres hoping we like the outcome today.

06-10-2016 GAME THREAD: Have the Reds Reached Bottom and Are Getting Better?

by Mary 11. June 2016 14:56
Sure feels like that is the case, but I will try not to be too optimistic about things like having Tony DeSclafani starting instead of Alfredo Simon, and Michael Lorenzon and Raisel Iglesias in the pen instead of anyone not named Wood, Cingrani, or Ohlendorf (I know that those three are nothing to brag about, but with some backup for the rest of the pen duties, I think they will be better than they have been, which has been about average).  The bats have also been coming alive, albeit somewhat inconsistently, and Adam Duvall has been terrific instead of being the platoon player he was penciled in to be.  Jay Bruce has all of his vowels in place this year, and no one talks about DFAing Zack Cozart for any reason.  Now to get Joey Votto to continue his improvement and play like he did the second half of 2015 and the Reds should be able to break even the balance of the season IMO.

05-31-2016: GAME THREAD: Bombs Away, It's Coors Field Time

by Mary 31. May 2016 18:13
We are about to time out on the prior thread, so I am putting up a new starter.  Jabber posted a link to Jamie Ramsey's article on Duvall and I thought I would include it here. Let’s talk about Adam Duvall.  In yesterday’s game against the Rockies at Coors Field, Duvall belted 2 home runs to give him 13 on the season (tied for 4th in the NL).  He’s having a fantastic month of May, batting .301 with 11 homers, 24 RBI, a .327 on-base pct. and .720 slugging pct. Perhaps we could see another Red in the Home Run Derby this year?  (hint: Vote Duvall) Duvall came to the Reds last season from San Francisco along with Giants’ top prospectRHP Keury Mella in exchange for Mike Leake.  Leake made 9 starts for the Giants before leaving as a free agent.  Mella, 22, is 4-4 this season with a 2.64 ERA in 10 starts with Class-A Daytona. As for Duvall, my friends at Inside Edge provided a list of remarkable stats for Duvall: He has a 1.043 SLG (24 total bases in 23 AB’s) over the past 7 days. (MLB Rank: 2nd of 224 full-time players; League Avg: .435) He has 11 HR on 32 Flyballs (34.4% HR/FLY) over the past 30 days. (MLB Rank: this leads MLB of 103 full-time players; League Avg: 13.1%) He has an OPS of 1.418 (24 PA’s) in the past 7 days. (MLB Rank: 4th of 228 full-time players; League Avg: .761) He has 26 Extra-Base hits out of 42 total hits (61.9% Extra-Base Hit Pct) this season. (MLB Rank: 4th of 215 full-time players; League Avg: 34.9%) He has homered once every 4.6 at bats over the past 7 days. (NL Rank: 1st of 67 full-time players; League Avg: 26.9) He is hitting .355 (11-for-31) on breaking pitches over the past 30 days. (MLB Rank: 12th of 125 full-time players; League Avg: .223) His Line Drive Pct is 29.4% (15/51) against fastballs this year. (MLB Rank: 13th highest of 218 full-time players; League Avg: 21.8%)

05-24-2016 GAME THREAD: Even With a Complete Game Thrown, Losing Continues

by Mary 24. May 2016 17:35
Brandon Finnegan threw probably the best game of his young MLB career and had the misfortune to be up against Cy Young winner Clayton Kershaw.  A 1-0 complete game loss has to be both encouraging and discouraging.  Good because it shows that Finnegan is all we have been believing him to be as a future ace level pitcher, bad because two hits by the offense in a game is not going to win many, if any, games.  Can the endless seeming loss streak stop in my former stomping grounds of Los Angeles?  Sure hope so, as 9 losses in a row is awful to watch.
