04-18-2018 GAME THREAD: Birds of A Different Feather Fly Into GABP

by Mary 18. April 2017 16:23
That rarest of species (at least in GABP) arrives tonight for a three game series--the Baltimore Orioles. There will be a few different names on the Reds' roster to greet them, with Sal Romana returning to the Bats after his not so great debut on Sunday and RHP Lisalverto Bonilla called up.  Bonilla is a mystery to me, but I gather he last pitched in the big leagues in 2014 for the Rangers (5 games total).  An old familiar name starts for the Reds tonight --Bronson Arroyo.  Sure hope this is the night his magic fountain of youth is rediscovered.

04-13-2017 GAME THREAD: Brew Crew Invades GABP For Four Games

by Mary 13. April 2017 10:29
Coming off an unbelievable 5-1 road trip to St. Louis and Pittsburgh, the Reds look to maintain the special feeling to the start of the season by winning their 4th straight series.  The old guys are starting the first two games (Arroyo on Thursday and Feldman on Friday) and I hope Bronson turns it around and Feldman keeps it where he was his second start.  Who will pitch in Rookie Davis's slot on Sunday is still TBD.  My personal bet is that it will be Sal Romano from L'Ville, as it slots into his day to pitch and his last outing was commanding for the Bats.

04-10-2017 Another Day, Another Series: Reds Head to Steel City

by Mary 10. April 2017 14:31
Reds start another series with the beanball warriors (AKA Pirates).  Let's hope the endless HBP and predictable retaliatory pitches are a thing of the past and not an ongoing thing for yet another year with the Pirates.     Hard to believe, but the Reds going into the series have the best ERA in the NL (three shutouts in six games--in spite of one 10 run blowout--will do that).  The bullpen continues to show that the last half of the 2016 season was only a sneak peak of their capabilities.  Without being overworked, I think they can be one of the best pens in the league--something we would laugh at this time last season when no late inning lead was comfortable or likely to last.

04-07-2017 GAME THREAD: The Little Red Machine Moves On to Birdland

by Mary 7. April 2017 16:16
It was a fun first series with no stupid moves and some very good pitching from the bullpen and Brandon Finnegan.  Hope we see more of the same as the Reds take the show on the road for the first time this season.  Amir Garrett (23 YO rookie) will be followed on the mound on Saturday by the Ancient Mariner (does Arroyo still have his boat?).

04-03-2017 Game Thread IT IS REALLY TIME FOR BASEBALL IN CINCINNATI!

by Mary 3. April 2017 00:05
Well, Cincinncati's annual (un)official holiday is today with the start of the baseball season following the Findlay Market parade.  I don't have high expectations for the final standings of the Reds team at the end of the season, but am looking forward to the continued growth of Billy Hamilton, an MVP season from Joey Votto, and a few high kicks from Bronson Arroyo. I am also anticipating some growing pains with all the rookies/near rookies on the mound and in the field, but hope that enough of them succeed at the top level of baseball  so that respecctable expectations on any particular day are that the Reds could post a win.  Nothing like starting the season off on the right foot, huh?  Photo from my sister who has an office near here.

10-30-2016 Thread: This Could Be the Final Game in 2016?

by Mary 30. October 2016 18:11
The Cubs are choking at home, resulting in the Indians being one game away from a World Series championship.  Will the Cubs manage to send the series back to Cleveland, or is tonight the night Cleveland takes it all?  We'll know in a few hours.

by Mary 22. October 2016 13:47
And up 3 games to 2.  Hard to imagine that the world series this year could be the Cubs versus the Indians.  Not exactly a match that jumps to the top of the preseason prediction list.   Onward to the WS!!

Hell has not yet frozen over and the Cubs live on to the next round.  Can both of these states continue?  We'll see in the next week how they do against the Dodgers.

10-06-2016 Let The Division Series Begin (and Conclude)

by Mary 6. October 2016 19:27
Now that the Blue Jays have gotten by the wild card playoff (bye-bye Orioles) and have won game one versus Texas, and the Mets fell to the inevitable even year juggernaut, the SF Giants (what can you say about MadBum that hasn't been said when it comes to his mastery in must win games?) we are on the nitty gritty division series.  Who to root for?  I'm still leaning a bit towards the Giants.

09/30/2016 This Is It For the Reds 2016 Season

by Mary 30. September 2016 18:29
The last series of the season (assuming the Reds are not going into the playoffs) is always bittersweet to me. Watching the games, even in the background while doing something else, is such a part of much of the year, starting with high hopes in spring training and not often seeing those hopes realized, that I miss them when it is off season.  How many days 'til pitchers and catchers report?   On another note, it appears that the Reds improved play once a few key bullpen members came off the DL saved Bryan Price's job. It had to be noticed that in spite of the 25 games below .500 at the ASG the team did not give up on the  season.  Team character was a large part of that, but player management also was important.
